Crystal Palace players given secret instructions to perfectly wind up Jean-Philippe Mateta following his failed transfer move
Former Premier League striker Charlie Austin has suggested that Palace players should wear AC Milan shirts as a lighthearted response to Mateta’s failed transfer. Austin believes classic dressing room banter provides the perfect way to ease tension following the dramatic collapse of negotiations.
Mateta’s desire to leave Selhurst Park dominated the winter transfer window after he informed club officials of his intention to depart and declined to renew his contract beyond 2027. Multiple suitors emerged, including Juventus and Nottingham Forest, who submitted a £35 million proposal. However, AC Milan represented his dream destination, with the Italian club’s interest first reported in December.
Negotiations intensified as the deadline approached, prompting Mateta to express frustration through social media with an angry emoji on Saturday night. A £30 million package deal between Palace and Milan appeared agreed the following day, only for the move to collapse twenty-four hours later. Milan withdrew after medical checks uncovered a knee concern during examinations conducted in Paris.
No alternative club subsequently pursued the 28-year-old forward, leaving him reluctantly committed to remaining at Palace. Austin, who previously experienced a failed medical at Hull in 2013, acknowledged the awkwardness Mateta faces upon returning to training. He described an inevitable strain within the squad but advocated for humor as the solution to restore equilibrium.
During a broadcast appearance, Austin recommended that teammates wearing Milan colors would effectively break the ice. He emphasized that such banter signals a cohesive and healthy dressing room environment rather than disrespect. Austin highlighted that Mateta must now concentrate on regaining form and maintaining his candidacy for France’s World Cup selection despite remaining at Palace for the season.
Palace completed the signing of Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolves for £48 million on deadline day, creating uncertainty regarding Mateta’s involvement in upcoming fixtures, including the imminent Brighton derby.
