Aston Villa recall star from loan to bolster Unai Emery’s squad with immediate playing prospects ahead
Aston Villa have brought back Leon Bailey from his loan spell at Roma, ending his temporary stint in Italy after less than five months. The winger departed for the Serie A club in August but is now returning to England, where he can potentially feature in upcoming fixtures under manager Unai Emery.
During his time in Rome, Bailey accumulated 11 appearances across all competitions, with seven of those in Serie A. However, his impact proved limited, as he started only two matches and failed to register any goals, though he did provide two assists for the Italian side.
Bailey’s loan was significantly hampered by injury troubles from the outset. A problem sustained during his first training session delayed his Roma debut until October, forcing him to miss approximately two months of action. This setback limited his ability to establish himself within the squad.
The 28-year-old Jamaican has been a fixture at Villa Park since 2021, when he joined from Bayer Leverkusen. Bailey has made 144 appearances, scoring 22 goals and providing 24 assists, though injuries have consistently interrupted his progress in the Premier League. His most productive campaign came in 2023-24, when he contributed ten goals and nine assists in league play, alongside six goal contributions in European competitions.
Villa are actively pursuing attacking reinforcements this transfer window. The club seeks a new striker after loaning out Donyell Malen to Roma. Bailey’s return bolsters their wide options, though the club continues targeting multiple striker targets. Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta has emerged as an option, while discussions around Tammy Abraham, currently on loan at Besiktas, present complications given the Turkish club’s position.
