The club seeks reinforcement in attack after Donyell Malen’s departure to Roma left Ollie Watkins as their sole recognized forward. Villa are evaluating multiple attacking targets simultaneously, with Mateta among their primary options alongside Tammy Abraham.

Negotiations surrounding Abraham present complications for Villa’s immediate plans. The English striker currently operates on loan at Besiktas from Roma, where he faces a conditional obligation to become permanent. While Villa have already reached an agreement with Roma regarding Abraham’s terms, the Turkish club’s involvement creates uncertainty that may necessitate alternative solutions.

Mateta is demanding approximately £150,000 weekly wages, more than double his current Palace salary. Mateta’s contract extends through 2027, yet Palace manager Oliver Glasner acknowledged the player may depart if suitable financial terms materialize. The French forward has transformed dramatically under Glasner’s management since February 2024, accumulating thirty-five league goals across seventy-three matches, following an earlier period marked by limited output during his initial Palace tenure.
