Virgil van Dijk’s unexpected new partner: Liverpool’s secret plan for a major young defensive signing emerges
Liverpool has been actively pursuing defensive reinforcements throughout the 2025-26 season. Following Marc Guehi’s move to Manchester City, the club shifted focus to other targets. They have now targeted a young defender to partner alongside Virgil van Dijk starting in 2026-27.
Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan emerged as Liverpool’s primary defensive target. The 26-year-old Italian left-back is viewed as van Dijk’s potential long-term replacement. However, acquiring him presents significant challenges. Inter Milan values him at approximately $93 million, and the defender remains a cornerstone for the Nerazzurri. Though open to leaving Serie A, his departure would be complex to negotiate.
Coach Arne Slot appreciates Bastoni’s left-footed profile and technical abilities. The defender has established himself among the world’s elite for three to four years, excelling particularly in one-on-one situations and distributing the ball. Yet the 26-year-old has not dismissed remaining at Inter, expressing contentment with his current club. Competition from Barcelona further complicates Liverpool’s pursuit.
Nico Schlotterbeck from Borussia Dortmund represents Liverpool’s alternative defensive option. The 26-year-old German defender mirrors van Dijk’s qualities considerably. He demonstrates exceptional strength in individual duels, possesses elite passing range, dominates aerially, and provides leadership. His contract expires in 2027, making a departure appear more realistic than Bastoni’s situation.
Schlotterbeck reportedly seeks an exit from Dortmund to challenge for major titles. He appears unlikely to renew his current contract arrangement. Nonetheless, Barcelona is also monitoring his availability, recognizing the need for a center-back matching his profile. This competing interest could complicate Liverpool’s negotiations.
Additional defensive concerns emerge regarding Ibrahima Konaté’s potential departure from Anfield. Contract renewal discussions between the Frenchman and Liverpool have stalled. Konaté could eventually leave as a free agent after failing to reach agreement on improved salary terms. This possible exit would intensify Liverpool’s need for defensive reinforcement beyond a single new signing.
