Former Nauset soccer star Abdel Talabi’s unexpected journey to becoming a fully fledged MLS player
Abdel Talabi, a former standout from Nauset, experienced an unforgettable moment when Inter Miami CF selected him 30th overall in the 2026 Major League Soccer SuperDraft’s first round. Unlike traditional sports drafts held in person, the MLS SuperDraft operates entirely online, with participants monitoring live trackers and social media updates. On December 18, Talabi was in his apartment near Bryant University with teammates when they discovered his selection through a campus livestream before his own screen updated.
The announcement created immediate celebration among Talabi and his teammates, who began excitedly shouting updates about Miami. Once he refreshed his browser and confirmed the news, Talabi immediately contacted his parents, Bola Talabi and Amy Harbeck. Inter Miami’s Chief Soccer Officer Alberto Marrero then reached out personally to congratulate him, and Talabi responded with determination, telling the club official he was ready to begin working toward professional soccer. The moment crystallized years of dedication and athletic achievement.
Talabi’s path to professional soccer included significant obstacles that tested his commitment. During his sophomore year at Bryant, he suffered a severe Achilles tendon tear that forced him to miss spring training and his entire junior season. The recovery process lasting approximately twelve months presented tremendous mental and physical challenges. He experienced doubt about whether he would return to competitive play, but he methodically worked through rehabilitation by celebrating incremental progress and maintaining focus on small achievable goals.
The injury ultimately benefited his career trajectory by allowing him to compete as a sixth-year graduate student. He returned for the 2023-24 season and started nearly every remaining game throughout his collegiate career. Talabi credits the support of people close to him for maintaining motivation during the darkest periods of recovery. His determination during this adversity, combined with consistent effort, positioned him for eventual professional recognition and the Inter Miami opportunity.
At Nauset High School, Talabi compiled an remarkable 83-3-1 record while earning two state championships in 2016 and 2018. His former coach John McCully described him with two defining characteristics: winner and dominator. McCully noted Talabi’s exceptional work ethic, stating he outworked any other player he had coached. Talabi’s calm demeanor under pressure and composed ball-handling separated him from peers throughout his high school years.
Talabi’s professional development extended beyond formal practice sessions. During offseasons, he independently researched skill-development drills online and trained in small groups or alone, focusing on continuous improvement rather than mere participation. His 2016 Nauset state championship teammates were inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in November, and the group maintained close connections through group chat. When Talabi’s MLS selection was announced nineteen days later, the immediate response from his former championship teammates was enthusiasm about obtaining Inter Miami jerseys bearing his name.
Looking toward his professional career, Talabi faces competition in Inter Miami’s preseason camps occurring throughout January and February. The club’s roster includes arguably history’s greatest soccer player in Lionel Messi, presenting both considerable challenge and opportunity. Talabi’s philosophy emphasizes team success above individual recognition, believing that personal achievements naturally follow when focusing on collective goals. His journey from high school standout through serious injury to professional selection demonstrates that persistent dedication and belief can overcome substantial obstacles.
