Danny Rohl slammed as ‘nuisance with an iPad’ after infuriating German legend on the sideline

Hansi Flick, currently overseeing Barcelona, has recently stepped up to defend Danny Rohl, the new Rangers manager, after Rohl was publicly criticized by Bayern Munich icon Mehmet Scholl. Scholl, known for his achievements with both Germany and Bayern, described Rohl as “a nuisance with his iPad” following the release of a documentary that chronicled Germany’s troubled 2022 World Cup campaign.

Rangers chose Rohl after an extended search to replace Russell Martin. Although Rohl initially turned down the offer, he eventually agreed to take the helm at Ibrox. Previously, Rohl worked as head coach at Sheffield Wednesday and also held coaching positions at Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, and Southampton prior to joining the German national team setup.

At just 31, Rohl was appointed assistant manager of Germany under Flick. However, the national team’s World Cup ended in disappointment, as they crashed out in the group stage following a defeat to Japan, a draw with Spain, and a victory over Costa Rica. The fallout from this failure was amplified by a behind-the-scenes documentary that exposed internal dynamics and led to pointed criticism, especially from Scholl.

Scholl’s assessment was blunt, arguing that Flick’s reliance on Rohl proved costly. He stated, “I don’t think the documentary did Hansi Flick any favours. But I still think he’s a great person and a very, very good coach. I think Flick was driven crazy at the World Cup by his assistant, Danny Rohl, who constantly distracted him with his iPad. He was a nuisance with his iPad. Hansi lost track of things a bit because he trusted the wrong man.”

In the wake of these remarks, Flick firmly supported Rohl’s credentials and defended their collaboration. “I value Danny as an absolute expert who shares my vision and ideas about football,” Flick said, emphasizing the trust and professional respect he still holds for his former assistant. Both Flick and Rohl ultimately left their roles with the German national team in 2023.

Amidst this backdrop, Rohl’s appointment at Rangers has sparked discussion, with some questioning whether he can bring a different approach to the Scottish club. However, former Southampton striker Charlie Austin, who worked with Rohl during his time in the Premier League, dismissed comparisons to Russell Martin, insisting Rohl’s style is unique. Austin stated that Rohl’s attacking philosophy would excite Rangers supporters and set him apart from his predecessors.
