Jimmy Thelin breaks silence on Sweden manager rumors as Aberdeen boss delivers decisive response
Jimmy Thelin, the current manager of Aberdeen, has addressed speculation linking him to the vacant Sweden national team post. The rumors surfaced following the dismissal of Jon Dahl Tomasson, who was let go after a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Kosovo. That loss left Sweden at the bottom of their World Cup qualifying group with only a single point from their first four matches.
Thelin’s name has reportedly appeared on a shortlist for the Sweden job, alongside high-profile candidates such as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Graham Potter. His successful tenure at Elfsborg in Sweden has contributed to the speculation. However, Thelin has dismissed the possibility of leaving Aberdeen at this time.
“It’s always an honour to be mentioned in these circumstances but I have a long contract here and I am really happy in Aberdeen Football Club,” Thelin stated. “We hopefully have so many good things to look forward too and my focus is 100 per cent here. I really enjoy to be at Aberdeen Football Club, with the spirit and surroundings here. We have been through a tough time but we still have a strong belief in the three year plan that we have. It’s a journey I really like to be involved in.”
Aberdeen recently secured a commanding 4-0 victory over Dundee, marking their first league win of the season after seven attempts. Despite this success, the team remains at the bottom of the table ahead of their upcoming match against St Mirren. The Dons have struggled historically when playing at the SMISA Stadium, having not won there in the league since December 2018—a run of eleven games.
Looking ahead to the St Mirren fixture, Thelin acknowledged the challenge his side faces. He praised St Mirren’s manager, Stephen Robinson, for building a consistent and solid team, but expressed confidence in his own squad’s progress. “The manager has been there for a while and has done a really good job. They are a solid team, clear in what they are doing and are consistent. But I also feel that Aberdeen Football Club and the team right now are bringing more and different attributes to the team and my feeling is that we are ready to make a really good game tomorrow.”
Thelin’s commitment to Aberdeen appears unwavering as he continues to focus on the club’s long-term ambitions. His comments have provided reassurance to supporters concerned about the possibility of losing their manager amid speculation from abroad.
