Rangers slam “shocking” fire attack on Walter Smith statue as police launch investigation
Authorities responded early Friday after a fire damaged the Walter Smith statue outside Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow. Video circulating online appears to show flames igniting near the statue’s right shoulder, reportedly after a scarf was set alight and thrown at the monument. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was called to the scene just before 1am, where firefighters extinguished burning refuse and ensured the area was safe.
Later that morning, police arrived following reports of fire damage. A spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed, “Around 9.15am on Friday, 10 October, 2025, we received a report of fire damage to a statue in the Edmiston Drive area of Glasgow. Enquiries are at an early stage.” The incident remains under investigation by authorities.
Rangers FC reacted strongly to the attack, issuing a statement that read: “Rangers FC is aware of an incident at the Walter Smith statue last night, and strongly condemns this shameful behaviour. The matter has been reported to Police Scotland, and work is underway to ensure the site is cleaned and returned to good condition.”
The club’s Fan Advisory Board also voiced outrage, stating: “A line was crossed last night in the shameful, shocking and senseless attack on the Walter Smith statue at Ibrox. Walter was not just a Rangers legend, he served the Scottish football community as a whole with dedication and pride over many decades. We call on anyone with any information on the lowlife who carried out these cowardly actions to contact the club.”
The statement continued: “We have already seen the open mocking of the 66 in recent months resulting in punishment from our courts and we hope the individual responsible for this disgusting episode is also dealt with accordingly.”
Walter Smith, who passed away in 2021, is revered as one of Rangers’ greatest managers, securing 21 major trophies throughout his career, including ten league titles. The statue was unveiled in his honour in May of the previous year, serving as a lasting tribute to his legacy both at Rangers and within Scottish football.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear as police continue their inquiries. The incident has provoked widespread condemnation from both the club and supporters, highlighting Smith’s enduring impact on the club and the wider football community. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to identify those responsible.
