Stressed Andre Onana shoves supporter as chaos erupts after Cameroon blunder and bottle hurled at Man Utd star
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana found himself at the center of controversy after Cameroon’s 1-0 defeat to Cape Verde in a World Cup qualifier. Onana, who has had a challenging season, was criticized for his involvement in the match’s decisive goal. During a crucial one-on-one, he hesitated on his line before diving the wrong way, allowing Dailon Livramento’s shot to seal the win for Cape Verde.
This loss significantly boosted Cape Verde’s hopes of making their first World Cup appearance while Cameroon dropped to second in their group with only two games left. After the match, a video circulated online showing Onana pushing a fan as he left the pitch, with another fan throwing a bottle at him from behind.
A source close to Onana clarified that his reaction was motivated by safety concerns. “You know after the game most of the fans, especially the Cape Verdean fans all flood the field,” the source explained. “They were all big fans of Andre but with the stress of the game he was just looking to rush into the dressing room because of the nature of how the pitch was flooded with fans. But afterwards it was nothing. A lot of the fans still waited for him to take pictures. It was the same when we got to the airport as plenty of fans were there waiting to take photos with him.”
Cameroon, featuring other notable players such as Carlos Baleba and Bryan Mbeumo, are now under pressure to win their final two group games to keep their World Cup dreams alive. Meanwhile, Onana’s future at Manchester United appears increasingly uncertain.
Reports indicate that advanced talks are underway for Onana to join Turkish club Trabzonspor on loan. Despite being signed by Erik ten Hag two seasons ago and holding the first-choice spot, a series of high-profile errors have put his position at United in jeopardy.
Most recently, Onana was at fault for a goal after misjudging a cross against Grimsby, resulting in yet another setback for the team. This season, he has been benched for United’s opening three league matches, with Altay Bayındır preferred as goalkeeper.
The arrival of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on deadline day has further complicated Onana’s situation at Old Trafford. With growing competition and a string of mistakes, his tenure as United’s number one is now under serious threat.
