The tribute was announced with a video showing van Dijk, now 34, returning to the grounds where his rise started.
Willem II released a statement to mark the occasion, saying: “Willem II’s youth academy unveiled a special tribute today: the main stand at Sportpark Prinsenhoeve will now bear the name ‘Virgil van Dijk Tribune’. The naming of the stand is a special gift from the club to Van Dijk: a token of appreciation for the impressive career of the former Willem II youth player, who grew into one of the best defenders in the world.”
The club, now competing in the Eerste Divisie after relegation from the Dutch top tier, played a crucial part in van Dijk’s early development. He joined the youth setup in Tilburg at eight years old, spending more than ten years learning and growing as a player. Despite his promise, van Dijk was never handed a senior appearance, and at 19, the club decided not to offer him a contract.
Following his release, van Dijk moved on a free transfer to FC Groningen, an Eredivisie club where he joined up with future Southampton team-mate Dusan Tadic. That move marked the start of van Dijk’s ascent through European football, beginning with a switch to Celtic in 2013.
