Aston Villa secures ex-Man United sensation as Unai Emery eyes double transfer coup on wild Deadline Day
Aston Villa have secured the signature of former Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof on transfer deadline day, beating out rivals Fiorentina and Everton for the Swedish international. The 31-year-old arrives at Villa Park as a free agent after his contract with United was not renewed at the end of last season, concluding an eight-year spell at Old Trafford.
During his time at Manchester United, Lindelof made 284 appearances and collected two trophies. His final season saw him play 25 matches as the club endured its worst-ever Premier League finish and fell short in the Europa League final. Despite the disappointing campaign, Lindelof’s wealth of experience remains highly valued.
Lindelof’s arrival is part of a busy deadline day for Villa. He is expected to be joined by another ex-United player, Jadon Sancho, who is reportedly set to join the club on loan. Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott is also anticipated to sign on a season-long loan, with an obligation for Villa to purchase him for £35 million at the end of the term.
Upon signing, Lindelof expressed his enthusiasm for the move, stating, “It’s a massive club, and I was super excited when I heard that the club wanted me. I spoke to my wife, and we felt it was a good move for us as a family and for me as a player.”
He continued to reflect on his experience in English football, adding, “I’ve been at the Premier League for many years, so I know what it’s all about. Hopefully, I can help the younger players with my experience, and also bring in the quality like I show on the pitch. I am super, super happy and thrilled to be part of this football club.”
Lindelof also spoke about his conversations with Villa manager Unai Emery, emphasizing the influence Emery had on his decision. “We (him and Emery) had a good talk a couple of days ago, and we just talked about the football and how he sees me as a player and what I can bring to the team. That as well was one of the things that made me want to come here, after that phone call. We had a good talk, and (I am) really looking forward to working under him.”
The defender is particularly keen to play at Villa Park, noting the passionate support he has witnessed as a visiting player. “Playing at Villa Park, the fans, it’s always a great, great atmosphere. For me, to be able to go out there and have them behind me this time is going to be amazing, so I’m really looking forward to that.”
Lindelof concluded by outlining his ambitions for the club, stating, “The standards are very, very high, and I can’t wait to try and bring that standard up a little bit as well.” The arrival of Lindelof and other high-profile signings signals Villa’s determination to strengthen their squad as they look ahead to the new season.
