Adam Wharton’s public gesture hints at Crystal Palace transfer shock in front of Eberechi Eze

As speculation grows around Eberechi Eze’s future at Crystal Palace, all eyes have shifted to Adam Wharton amid transfer rumors. During a recent live broadcast from Palace’s training facility in Beckenham, Sky Sports reporter Gary Cotterill found himself in close proximity to both Eze and Wharton while discussing their potential moves.

In an unexpected moment, Cotterill was prompted on air to question Wharton about his intentions. Rather than probing, he quipped, “I’m not going to ask Adam Wharton about his future, no.” The remark, delivered within earshot of the two players, sparked a subtle reaction: Eze turned with a knowing smile, while Wharton, in a clear gesture, pointed to the Palace badge on his vest, signaling his commitment to remain at Selhurst Park for now.

The exchange didn’t end there. Cotterill hinted that Eze might not be “100 per cent committed” to Crystal Palace, which prompted a direct response from the player who told the reporter, “Give it a rest.” These moments, caught on live television, became a talking point for fans and pundits alike.

Interest in Wharton has surged since his arrival at Palace from Blackburn in January 2024. The 21-year-old midfielder’s rapid ascent has attracted the likes of Manchester United, especially after the club was unable to sign Brighton’s Carlos Baleba. Wharton’s achievements, including FA Cup and Community Shield victories with Palace and a senior England cap, have only heightened his profile.

Other European giants have also tracked Wharton. Bayern Munich’s approach last summer was rebuffed by Palace, and Real Madrid sent scouts to watch him in action. Despite this, Palace appear determined to retain Wharton, at least for the foreseeable future.

Eze, on the other hand, seems likely to depart. Reports suggest Tottenham Hotspur is nearing an agreement to sign the attacking midfielder, with Palace expected to receive around £60 million—a sum just below his previous release clause. Tottenham’s urgency increased following James Maddison’s ACL injury, which will keep him out for most of the upcoming season.

As Eze’s exit looms, Palace have already moved to secure a replacement. The club reportedly has a verbal agreement with Leicester City for Bilal El Khanouss, a 21-year-old Moroccan international who has already made an impact for the Foxes this season. El Khanouss is set to join for a reported fee of £32 million, as Palace look to reinforce their midfield for the challenges ahead.
