Man Utd turns down transfer bids from five top clubs in dramatic Harry Maguire saga

Harry Maguire’s future at Manchester United has been the subject of considerable speculation, as the club reportedly turned down five separate offers for the defender this summer. The offers, which came from three Premier League teams and two Italian clubs, were all rejected by United’s transfer chiefs, according to the Daily Mail.

Following a season that saw Manchester United finish in a disappointing 15th place—one of their worst performances in Premier League history—the club was expected to overhaul its squad. Despite this, Maguire, who joined United from Leicester City in 2019 for a record-breaking £80 million fee for a defender, appears to have retained the faith of senior figures at Old Trafford.

Maguire, now 32, is entering the final year of his £190,000-a-week contract. While there have not yet been discussions regarding a renewal, reports suggest that United are considering offering him an extension to potentially allow him to end his career at the club. Maguire is believed to be keen to remain at United, where he has made 246 appearances and scored 15 goals since arriving.

The defender’s role in pre-season has grown after he initially missed out on the squad’s trip to the United States for the Premier League Summer Series. He later joined up with the team, coming off the bench in matches against West Ham and Everton and starting against Bournemouth before being substituted at halftime.

Last summer, Maguire came close to joining West Ham United in a deal worth around £30 million, but the transfer ultimately collapsed. Under Erik ten Hag, his status at the club had seemed uncertain, but current manager Ruben Amorim has given him renewed confidence, describing Maguire as a “leader again” back in January.

Recently recovered from injury, Maguire has spoken openly about his ambitions for the upcoming campaign. “I just want to be part of a successful team this season. I think last season was a tough season for everyone individually, but also as a team, as a squad, as a club,” he told Red Devils club media. “This season, there are no excuses. We’re going to have a lot of time to prepare for the Premier League games, and we’ve got to make sure we’re ready. So, for myself, it’s making sure I’m available, I’m fit, I’m ready to go, and give everything I can to this team and this club.”

Though transfer speculation persists, Maguire has also been linked with French teams Marseille and Monaco, as well as Turkish sides Fenerbahce, Besiktas, and Galatasaray. Notably, Fenerbahce and Besiktas are managed by former United bosses Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, respectively.

As United wrap up their preseason with a match against Fiorentina, attention will soon shift to their Premier League opener against Arsenal. Meanwhile, off the pitch, United are reportedly competing with Newcastle for the signing of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.
