Rangers – Transfer News: New signing arriving and he could be the next Calvin Bassey !
The Scottish Premiership side Rangers have made their third signing of the summer, securing the services of young French defender Clinton Nsiala from AC Milan. Former player Marco Negri has been keeping a close eye on Nsiala and believes that while he may not feature heavily at first, there is potential for him to follow in the footsteps of Calvin Bassey.
Bassey, who joined Rangers from Leicester City in 2020 for a nominal fee before moving to Ajax for £20m in 2022, serves as an example of the type of success Rangers hope to replicate with Nsiala. “He’s a centre-back with a very good, modern profile,” said Negri. Very aggressive, comfortable on the ball, but still very young and inexperienced at senior level.”
Negri notes that patience will be key in developing Nsiala’s talents and adapting him to the demands of playing for a club like Rangers. The language barrier should not be an issue as manager Philippe Clement can communicate in French due to his time working with Monaco.
However, expectations are high at Ibrox Stadium and players must perform quickly despite being development projects. “No-one gets too much time at Ibrox,” Negri stated. Yet he remains confident that Nsiala could prove to be a valuable addition to the team.
The strategy behind this acquisition aligns with Rangers’ long-term vision: identifying promising talent available at low cost, nurturing them into successful players within the club’s ranks, and potentially selling them on for significant profit when larger clubs come calling. With other Italian teams reportedly interested in Nsiala, Rangers have managed to secure what could be considered a coup.
“The board of Milan were very upset that he didn’t sign a new contract,” revealed Negri, highlighting how highly regarded Nsiala was within his former club. For Rangers, it seems they’ve set their sights firmly on building for the future – and Clinton Nsiala represents another step towards that goal.
